Activate Australia’s Skills welcomes Senate migration report

The Activate Australia’s Skills campaign welcomes the recommendations by the Joint Standing Committee on Migration, which adds further weight to the campaign’s calls to reform Australia’s skills recognition system to address shortages, productivity and rising prices.

The Migration, Pathway to Nation Building Report released by the Migration Committee recommends many of the reforms Activate Australia’s Skills is advocating for including:

  • Establishing a national skills recognition body
  • Creating a seamless process for skills recognition including online portal in languages
  • Removing cost barriers to skills recognition
  • Setting up skills recognition navigators

The report also recommends reforms to the migration system to support skills and qualification recognition on aligning English language requirements to suit actual work and safety requirements

“All political parties must heed these recommendations and commit to our simple plan to activate Australia’s skills. There is a growing consensus between business and civil society that this must be a priority.

The Blueprint for reform would activate the potential of the 621,000 qualified migrants who are ready to work.” said Violet Roumeliotis, CEO of Settlement Services International and convenor of the Activate Australia’s Skills campaign.

“We look forward to working with the Committee and all levels of Government to ensure a comprehensive solution is implemented”.
